The Pilgrim Story
On a bright November morning in 2011, nine teenagers packed their bags, loaded themselves into two blue minivans, and began the 150 mile trek to St. Cloud, Minnesota to witness a theater performance that would literally change some of their lives. “We knew a lady whose niece was directing a play.” remembered Aly, TAG’s director and “head dreamer”, in a recent interview. The production was completely put on by teenagers, so of course, a skit group made up of all teens was more than interested.
The play was called Pilgrim, a musical adaption of John Bunyan's classic, Pilgrim’s Progress. Those teenagers were nine of the earliest TAG members, and this was their first real trip as a group. “We made a lot of great memories along the way” recalled Nick, a member of TAG at the time. “So many inside jokes… Don't even get me started on the Excelerators.” (You'll get the reference if you watch our “St. Cloud Takeover” video.) After meeting the cast and a visit to the local Perkins, our tired troupe headed home, the entire way talking about what we had just seen. Almost immediately we began dreaming of performing the musical ourselves. But TAG wasn't big enough to put on a full scale production at the time, and so our dreams of Pilgrim went on the back burner until December 2014, when suddenly, Pilgrim began popping back up into daily conversation. Before we knew it, we were ordering scripts, planning rehearsals, and holding auditions.
Through our four months of rehearsals we hit a lot of potholes, but by His Grace, God guided us through, and almost too soon tech week was upon us.The long days and late nights were a bit too much for a few of us, and some of us could barely raise our voices above a hoarse croak in the days leading up to the performances, but again God got us though. Our dreams came true on June 25th, 2015, almost four years after our trip to see Pilgrim for the first time, when we were privileged to bring our very own production of Pilgrim to the Chippewa Valley. We were more than blessed to be able to put on this play, which is still impacting us, and those who experienced it, and will continue to do so for months and years into the future. Soli deo gloria
